Vintage revival is the name of the game in home decor lately. Everything from true mid century furnishings to pieces designed with vintage inspiration is popping up in our stores and our homes and I’m loving it. My favorite interiors combine a mix of vintage and modern, with some color and quirk for good measure. One of my favorite vintage pieces is the cane chair. So, today’s post is the first in a series dedicated to my everyday obsession with cane chairs. Stay tuned for more posts regarding how to style, modernize, and buy them.
I love me some good caning. There are lots of other furniture designs that feature caning such as coffee and side tables. Today, we are going to focus on the MVP, the cane chair. The cane chair is named after its backing (and sometimes seating) style. It features a woven look with structured holes and comes in a variety of styles…my favorite is obviously the cantilever. Let’s go on a little journey to show you how amazing (and 100% versatile) this chair is. By the end of this post, you too will be in looooove (hopefully).

I personally love this chair with a round table. I think it looks so, so inviting and is very pleasing to the eye. Because of the curves in the chair, it is the perfect partner for a round table against a boxy room. It’s so perfect.

There seems to be 2 traditional schools of thought when it comes to the color story of a cane chair: natural wood or natural with black accent. In a later post, we will talk about painting and reupholstering to modernize this chair, but for today, we are just talking about the natural (and beautiful) state of this chair.
This chair looks gorgeous with literally every style. It’s the perfect dining chair for your space. You can use it in super modern settings but it also is right at home in a farmhouse style dining area. The wood lends itself to being a more rustic piece while the clean lines modernize this vintage beauty. I’m serious when I say this is the MVP of chair design; there are so many variations of this chair to suit your needs its incredible.

Here we have an example of a more modern vignette. Above and below we feature a giant neutral rug and oversized art (my fave). The style above features my other obsession, the tulip table, which is a great addition as it too is mid century. You can pair this chair with other vintage elements like the tulip table or a Milo Baughman, or you could throw caution to the wind (also my fave) and pair it with something modern and “trendy”. Either style works beautifully.

Let’s talk globe pendants. FYI, there’s a roundup coming soon of the best globe lights so stay tuned for that. But you’ll notice a trend in some of these images: the globe light. Clean curved lines of the chair are complimented by repetition through other elements like the globe light or a round table. Globe lights are another great example of a vintage style made modern. One of my favorite aspects of my neighborhood (upper west side, Manhattan) is the super old globe street lights with detailed lamp posts. It’s a classic style.

So, what say you? Is the cane chair not the best chair you’ve ever seen? Ok, that might be an exaggeration. But it’s a gorgeous chair, whether you choose to buy vintage or from a list of current vendors that will be posted next week on this blog. The cane chair is one of the most famous (and popular) chair designs that has stood the test of time and even increased in popularity.

I would style this chair with a tulip table, large round woven rug, oversized chandelier, cool pottery with a sprig of eucalyptus for the tablescape, and some amazing art. Not to forget adding some greenery; this chair looks amazing with natural elements. I would do a big statement piece of art and stray away from the gallery wall, as it would be too busy and take your focus away from the superstar. Style this rock star however you want, and it will shine.
