Fall 2018 Interior Design Trend Forecast

fall 2018 interior design trend forecast
I'm sitting here writing this as the heat index in NYC today is 105 degrees. Come on, fall! Fall is my favorite season. I much prefer the in between seasons like fall and spring where temperatures aren't as extreme and the world just seems a little softer. I like to make little adjustments to our interior design seasonally, just to keep things fresh (and because I get bored). Today, I'm sharing the fall 2018 interior design trend forecast so that you can make some little adjustments in your home as well!

Fall 2018 Interior Design Trend Forecast

Victorian Inspired

We’re talking moody colors, large patterns, and FLORALS! If you follow The Makerista, you know this is Gwen’s season to shine! She’s all about this Victorian vibe and even has her followers join in on the fun with the hashtag #thriftlikethemakerista. What’s great about this is that vintage will be king; so you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get this look. Just hit up local thrift shops, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist and you’ll find some gems.

I will give you a little warning though, not everyone can handle a dark and moody space. I made this tragic mistake a few years back when I transformed my living room into a modern Victorian paradise. It was great, until I had to live with it everyday. Interior design affects your mood, so if you prefer things bright and cheery, this trend won’t be for you, and that’s ok!

Modern Neutrals

I’ve been saying this for a while, modern neutrals are IN. I’m obsessed with Katie Hodges Design, Amber Interiors, Kate Marker Interiors, and JDP Interiors, but this isn’t news to you. Scroll through any of their sites and they have really modernized the coveted Nate Berkus neutral palette. No longer are neutrals boring, but breathtaking! Try adding some neutral accents in your own home and see how much calmer it feels. The fall 2018 interior design trend forecast is as much about the minimalist neutrals as it is about maximalism and color.

Sculptural Silhouettes

If you’ve been following furniture trends the last few years, you would have noticed that sculptural pieces and architectural detailing are in. Perhaps this is a rebellion caused by the ubiquitous blocky rectangular farmhouse dining table, but now, we are going for softer lines and intimate detailing. Vintage inspired furniture, like these stunning cantilever chairs above, is making a big impact in our homes as we seek to modernize classic silhouettes. A mixture of geometric and curve linear shapes in your space will be the perfect balance.

With the sculptural detailing though, be prepared to pare down your accents. If your large pieces will have architectural details or be sculptural in nature, you’re not going to really need a supporting cast in the form of accessories. Go for minimalism and let each piece stand alone in its glory. The fall 2018 interior design trend forecast is all about incorporating pieces that are special and can stand alone.

Colorful Abstract Art

This is my favorite trend (no shock there). I love abstract art and I love color. I’ve talked before about the rise in illustration and how that is affecting the art and design world. We are going for simple and bright designs that are modern and minimal. Think of these pieces as an updated and fun Mark Rothko painting. In case you didn’t know about the illustration/lettering uprising, my favorite artists on Instagram are: Timothy Goodman, Andy J Pizza, Adam JK, Agathe Singer, HomSweetHom, By Mari Andrew. The above painting is from Lenna Arty on Etsy, but she also has a wayyyy more affordable option via prints sold on Society6.

Jewel Tones and Rust

This season, you can expect to see a lot of emerald, gold, pinks and rust tones, as well as dark and moody navy and black. You might follow SongofStyle on Instagram for her fashion, but did you also know she’s a trained interior designer? The tile in her home is swoon-worthy. The pattern, the colors, the vase and chair pairing…it’s all just too perfect. Hop on board this trend by adding some warm earth tones or brilliant emeralds to your home.

Contrasting Textures

Layering rugs, mixing prints, contrasting patterns? YES, YES, AND YES. Textiles are what make a home feel like a home. That cozy warmth that everyone wants in their home is just a matter of introducing items that feel good. Don’t be scared. Just balance out the patterns with neutral walls and curtains like Kate Marker did above, and you will have a heavenly home…perfect for the cold weather months! In the fall, nothing is greater than layers, right?

Bespoke Elements

You’re probably thinking, “ughhhhh, this sounds expensive”. Well friend, it isn’t!  Bespoke just means to either buy custom or fake custom. What I mean by fake custom is to buy that suuuuper affordable thrifted vintage chair and reupholster it. Buy that nice fabric and make your own pillows and curtains for a fraction of the cost. Do the DIYs you were too afraid to do. Make your home look like it belongs to YOU. Go to the craft store and make a darling faux flower arrangement (I do this every season). Spray paint a lamp and paint a lampshade to give it new life. The options are endless and you can either buy or transform what you already own. Customize it yourself. The fall 2018 interior design trend forecast includes plenty of opportunity for an affordable DIY, so take advantage.

Handmade Decor

We all love texture, right? But have you tried to incorporate texture on your walls? Places like Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie are famous for their wall hangings, but you can also do a DIY like Kelly Mindell from Studio DIY did. This is the age of the internet, which means any tutorial is only one click or one Youtube video away. There has never been a time for you to be more empowered. Try to make something yourself and enjoy the process. Or, you could purchase something handmade from a (preferably local) artisan. Support the arts. Support your community. But also, support your own creativity and ingenuity.

So, what do you think of the fall 2018 interior design trend forecast? I am excited. We are collectively moving in a different design direction that is focused on self empowerment, affordability, and supporting local artists and artisans. What’s not to love?!
