Everyday Obsession: Black Steel Doors and Windows

black steel doors and windows
I've been a long time fan of those gorgeous steel black French doors and windows. I love the look of them as exterior walls and doors, but now they are making their way indoors in the form of partitions and even glorious shower doors. Black steel doors and windows are so chic and modern, yet give a nod to those historical French doors we are all obsessed with.

I’ve been a long time fan of those gorgeous steel black French doors and windows. I love the look of them as exterior walls and doors, but now they are making their way indoors in the form of partitions and even glorious shower doors. Black steel doors and windows are so chic and modern, yet give a nod to those historical French doors we are all obsessed with.

It’s funny how trends evolve. We were sick of walls so we made everything open concept, then we realized that we had to keep every room tidy in order for the space to look clean. So, now we are walling it back up! But, to preserve the openness we love, we are using awesome black steel doors and windows as our light leaking partitions. And the results are MAGICAL.

Black steel partitions work especially well in a studio apartment. As humans, we feel safer in less expansive environments, so if we can find a way to build partitions without blocking light, we are going to do it. Not only do these steel partitions work with industrial style decor, they also give off a really California-cool vibe. Black steel doors and windows will fit pretty much any style room. They are modern but also remind you of those gorgeous vintage factory windows. You’ll see some awesome rustic examples below as well.

If you are considering a remodel, don’t wall it up, window it up! You can use these beautiful black steel doors and windows in so many applications! I am obsessed with their use as shower doors. The grid pattern is FANTASTIC. One of my favorite vendors for the “grid” shower doors is Coastal Shower Doors. Just check out their instagram; they do some amazing work.

Nate Berkus used these steel windows as a kitchen partition to separate the two spaces but still leave both filled with light. If you look, you can also see he used the same style for his windows.

Have you wondered why executive offices typically have glass partitions? It’s because they still make the space light and airy, but also give some much needed room dividing and offer privacy if you install curtains. The same is true for a home office. You can install a black steel partition and door instead of your typical drywall. This is especially great for a small space; you won’t feel so trapped if you’re able to be enclosed but not in a cavern.

Do you have an all seasons room? This would be a great way to feature it in your home. Better yet, install the steel interior door leading to the all seasons room and enclose that room with black steel wall to ceiling windows. How beautiful would that look???

This is actually my forever inspirational kitchen image. This was the West Village home of Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent before they sold it. The kitchen solarium is #goals. Is this not the most beautiful space you’ve ever seen? These are few and far between in NYC and are truly a hidden gem. I don’t believe this particular example is new, and might even be original to the structure and made of iron.

Now the fun part: using these black steel doors and windows in your BATHROOM. YASSS, QUEEN. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn uses a lot of these doors in his bathroom remodels and they always look perfect. This style works especially well now because of the popularity of matte black finishes and patterned encaustic tile.

So, what do you think? Would you use black steel doors and windows in your own home? I would love to know! Personally, I cannot get enough. I think this look is so classic but lends a modern twist on any space. My ultimate goal would be to have a brownstone with the exterior back walls to be all black steel windows. How gorgeous?
