My Domaine

I live in a small space in the middle of Manhattan, so I am always extremely interested in seeing how others use their small spaces. This 345 square foot guest house in California is the ultimate modern small space. See how they fit everything without sacrificing good design.

This space reminds me of a studio apartment in New York City. One in the top floor of a brownstone, with lots of light, and amenities such as laundry. It is a modern small space with a minimalist and neutral aesthetic and rustic touches; perfect to make it the ultimate comfortable environment.

I love color, but I will admit that in a small space or studio, loud colors can make you feel queasy. There is just not enough space to have a bold color palette. This modern small space guest house has expertly mixed luxury living with warm touches, so you don’t really even notice the lack of space.

A Modern Small Space Guest House

The home owners of this Spanish style California bungalow wanted a guest house but didn’t want to sacrifice their entire backyard to make it happen. So a compromise was made; this 345 square foot guest house would provide everything needed for a comfy stay, while still allowing ample room for an outdoor area (something city dwellers WILL NOT give up).

Shaun Crha of Wrensted Interiors designed this home so that guests feel welcome and like they could put their feet up. There is nothing worse than a guest space that feels too fancy; you can’t relax if you’re worried about knocking over a precious vase. This rustic casual interior is a modern small space lover’s dream come true. Let’s take the tour!

Plenty of light, a neutral color palette throughout, and natural touches make this modern small space feel larger than it actually is. The kitchen reminds me of one of my favorites, that used to belong to design duo Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. It’s super French, rustic, and fabulous.

What I find most interesting about this modern small space is that usually, an area rug is used to visually break up a space and define different areas. In this case, the area rug is actually connecting the seating area with the bedroom area. And yet, it all works.

Could you see yourself in this guest house and not feel cramped?
