You know I love a good tablescape design. Last week, I posted about 16 last minute DIY Mother’s Day gifts, and there are some really great things on that list to check out. This gave me another idea: how about a post about creative DIY planters for your graduation parties coming up? Many people get together with family and friends for a celebration and need to quickly create a special tablescape. Let me show you how to make some really easy and creative DIY planters so your tablescape can be poppin’.
There are sooooo many different celebrations in spring and summer, so these creative DIY planters can apply to any party or get together you are hosting. Things like bridal showers, baby showers, high school graduations, college graduations, birthday parties, going away parties, memorial day parties, fourth of July parties, Labor Day parties, the list goes on. Any event can have a cool tablescape and photo wall.
Most of your celebrations will be outside since the weather is nice, so we want it to feel like an outdoor party! The way to do that is with color and texture. My best advice is to take your inspiration from nature. Are there any colors in nature that bring you happiness? What does your dream flower bouquet look like? Any color you see in nature, use in your party decor.
Not a color lover? That’s cool too. If you want a super neutral color scheme, all of these creative DIY planters can be painted neutrals. Most of them have cool architectural elements, so color is an afterthought. Remember what I always say about neutral spaces: if there is an absence of color, there cannot be an absence of interest. You can add interest with thoughtful textiles, patterns, and shapes.
Of course, choosing all colorful accents might get chaotic, so it’s best to create a healthy balance of colorful elements offset by neutrals that soften the blow. That’s how you properly do visual appeal! It’s a see saw of balancing color, texture, pattern, and scale. So, let’s checkout these creative DIY planters for your super awesome boho graduation party.
Creative DIY Planters for Boho Graduation Parties
These creative DIY planters are all super quick, easy, and affordable. Some require you to make small planters using air dry clay, some include hot gluing decorative elements, and some give you a fun color scheme to paint your terracotta. The point is, these creative DIY planters will make for really special decor. Like when you go to a wedding and you can tell the table decorations are handmade. It’s just the little touches that can transform your occasion and make it perfectly you.
If you are concerned about the environment, DIY planters are the way to go when it comes to decor. They are not single use throw aways and can be sent home with guests or kept as your own home decor. Everyone loves a fun planter, and these will be associated with a lovely memory. It’s a win win!
1. Mini Succulent Clay Planter
Coco Kelley
This is a really cool DIY if you want to make something that is architectural and unique. These little pots are literal works of art and any guest would be thrilled to take this home. Making creative DIY planters is all about finding unique shapes and colors to try so it looks handmade and special.
2. Wood Detail Planter
Real Simple
Fun right? These planters just scream, “I’M HERE TO PARTY”! They are super simple to make and can fit any style, from boho to shabby chic to tribal. The craft store will sell multiple wooden shapes so you can just pick your favorites and glue those babies on the pots. You know how I’m always saying that if you are going to do neutrals, at least make sure your item has interest? This is a great example of a pot that is so detailed and interesting, it would look stunning in a simple white color.
3. Architectural Clay Pots
Say Yes
Here is another great example of creative DIY planters that can look just as good without color. You could even fill them with colorful wildflowers that you hand pick. These little pots would also look great outside the party such as on the back of a toilet tank or displayed on a shelf.
4. Stamped Clay Succulent Pots
Damask Love
Probably the best thing about clay is that as it dries, you can carve little shapes into it. Stamping is really popular among clay crafts because it adds unique detail again without the need for color.
5. Ombre Planter
Real Simple
Who doesn’t love stripes and ombre? These in particular would look so good in a macrame plant hanger. If you want to make a unique photo wall, just hang some hand painted pots that the guests can take home. This would be great both indoors and outdoors.
6. Color Block Pots
A Beautiful Mess
You can use these painted pots in a number of different applications at your gathering. They would be the cutest candy bar, well wishes bowl, table marker, menu holder, etc. You can fill with sand, soil, or rocks and post your paper good for display.
7. Marbled Ombre Concrete Planter
Apartment Therapy
These are my favorite creative DIY planters. How fun are they? If you size the holes properly, they can double as tea light holders. That would be such a beautiful tablescape. Feel free to think out of the box with these also. You can make the hole bigger and use them as flower vases that would be a beautiful door stop. You know when you’re entertaining, everyone is constantly moving in and out of the house. They would also make fun silverware holders if you have a family style meal.
8. Wall Hanging Planter
A Beautiful Mess
This planter is the most labor intensive on this list, but the payoff is worth it if you want a focal point. After you have a show stopping planter for your party, you can add this to your home decor! This would also make a great photo wall or even to highlight the food or gift table.
9. Faux Glazed Ceramic Pot
Alexandria Mavis
Ceramics are fun but they are difficult to DIY unless you have a kiln. This DIY gives you the same look as a handmade and fired ceramic, but without all the hassle. If you have a gathering needing an activity, this would be a fun craft to do with your guests. Just make sure you allow time to dry before transporting.
10. Dip Dye Succulent Pot
I Spy DIY
Dip dye is the easiest way to get that great ombre look going without much effort. This is a great repeating pattern to have scattered around your party. You can do different colors and place them in hanging macrame planters.
11. Mini Succulent Garden
Homey Oh My
You know what would be a really fun idea for this? If you shop at a thrift store and get a bunch of vintage pottery for these little succulent gardens! That would be such a cool and colorful way to add some personality to your decor. If you don’t have any good thrift stores around you, I suggest getting small bowls from IKEA or Target. They are affordable and come in different color ways.
12. Lace Flower Pots
A Beautiful Mess
If you are hosting a baby or bridal shower, this would be the creative DIY planters you need to make in bulk. These are so cute and have awesome texture for the neutral lovers out there.
13. Cactus Planter
Craft Coral
I LOVE wide planters that are footed. This would look great as a centerpiece if you have a child-free party. Those cactus needles are for adults only! Home Depot has some cool footed planters for less than $10.
14. 5 Minute Macrame Planter
What’s Up Moms
Yes, you will recognize this from the DIY Mother’s Day gift post, but hanging planters are such a great idea for your indoor and outdoor decor! If you’re having a big party, why not create your own photo booth wall by hanging up a group of macrame planters with color blocked terractotta pots? Use any of the painted pot tutorials on this list and pair with different colored macrame ropes for an instagram worthy photo op!
If you need help deciding what succulents to get, here’s a nice guide.
What do you think? Would you do any of these DIYs for your party? I’m all about a good party with thoughtful decorations that don’t end up in the landfill. Using plants as decor will always be a good idea.
