The Best Colorful Homes on Domino

I am obsessed with colorful homes. I think they are so happy, and obviously show that someone really special lives there. As a society, I think we have an appreciation of color because it is thought to only be used by the "brave". Well, while that might be true, there are other ways to sneak color into an otherwise neutral home. My favorite technique is adding color through art prints. Today, I've rounded up the best colorful homes I've found on the internet. Caution: fun ahead.

As a society, I think we have an appreciation of color because it is thought to only be used by the “brave”. Well, while that might be true, there are other ways to sneak color into an otherwise neutral home. My favorite technique is adding color through art prints. Today, I’ve rounded up the best colorful homes I’ve found via my love, Domino Mag. Caution: fun ahead.

The most important thing to remember is that everyone can use some color. Even if you a neutral person, pops of color in specific places (laundry room, kitchen, bathroom, kid’s room) will make you so much happier in your space. Color is energizing and so special, so it’s important to collect inspirational images so you know how to do it properly.

In all of these spaces, notice that the color isn’t overwhelming. It is meticulously curated and also balanced with plenty of white. You can successfully mix color and pattern as long as you balance it out with something less loud. The upper right image is from my favorite home of all time, belonging to artist, Angela Chrusciaki Blehm. It will get a post to itself coming up here soon because you need to see the entire space. It’s my favorite home of all time.

See how neutral these spaces are? Colorful art and furnishings are added to spruce up the space. The image with the green chairs was designed by Nate Berkus, who traditionally only uses a super neutral palette. But, even Nate finds ways to add color without sacrificing his signature neutral “collected over time” aesthetic. The best colorful homes don’t have to look like a preschool; they can be grown up and understated!

If you are afraid of adding color to the busier areas of the home, 2 spaces where color will never fail are the laundry room and bathroom. Painted cabinetry and fun accents add life to an otherwise “meh” space. How energized would you be to walk into your laundry room and be greeted by sunshine in the form of yellow cabinets? If you used a fun wallpaper and colorful painted cabinetry, cleaning your kid’s bathroom wouldn’t be so bad. A surefire way to impress your guests would be to design a creative and unexpectedly wonderful guest bathroom.

I know this looks dramatic, but this is exactly what we did in our bedroom. It’s a small space and if it’s too light it looks like an insane asylum, and if it’s too dark it looks like a prison. It was the middle of winter when we painted our bedroom walls and ceiling Danube by Sherwin Williams.  A colorful midtone won’t be as dramatic as you think in your mind. If it’s a light color, it tends to scream neon or primary, but a mid tone is your answer if you want a softer version of a dramatic design moment. The best colorful homes should have a little hidden design gem. My bedroom is our gem.

I’ve lived with my bedroom this color for a few years now and it’s time to change! I am returning it back to white and sewing some bright yellow roman shades to energize that space. The color scheme in there is various shades of blues, teals, and yellows, with whites and grays for balance. It’s all about balance when you’re working with bright colors. You don’t want to overload your retinas, people.

Here are 2 great examples of colorful art dictating the space. If you want to add accent colors, the best way is to use the colors in your art piece and repeat them throughout the space. It will tie the room together completely, and you won’t be overwhelmed. It’s a great way to add energy to neutral spaces without being too out there for the average person.

The best colorful homes are the ones that use a mixture of color and pattern the smartest, taking advantage of any opportunity for a small design moment. Color isn’t just reserved for the young; your space can look really modern and mature if you follow my color rules. Stick to a palette of 3-5 colors depending on how large the space is. Make sure you repeat these colors or tones of the colors so the space feels cohesive. Also, make sure to balance the bright tones with shades such as white, gray, and black. Always remember, a white space doesn’t have to stay that way. White is the best and most popular back drop to showcase a colorful design anyway, so you’re already on your way!

What do you think? Are you team color or team neutral? If you are team neutral, but you find your space lacking a certain zeal, try adding color slowly. Add a couple neutral throw pillows with colorful accents to your sofa, maybe a pastel throw blanket, a neutral rug with a little bit of color, a colorful ceramic, etc. There are many ways to spice up your space, even if you are committed to neutrals.
