I recently wrote about having fun taking digital tours of other people's houses (you know, since you can't actually go anywhere), and today I'm continuing that trend! I recently read a House Beautiful article that was basically all about color, and I wanted to share what stood out to me with you! So here we go, let's all peep my favorite new home decor color schemes of 2020.

Stuck at home, eh? Girl, SAME. I recently wrote about having fun taking digital tours of other people’s houses (you know, since you can’t actually go anywhere), and today I’m continuing that trend! I recently read a House Beautiful article that was basically all about color, and I wanted to share what stood out to me with you! So here we go, let’s all peep my favorite new home decor color schemes of 2020.

I really enjoy color. I think it’s a great mood booster and if it’s your style, could be a much needed addition to your home decor. For me, color brightens and uplifts. I’ve tried the whole moody room thing and man, I just felt depressed sitting in my own home! Now, I prefer my interiors to be light and bright with some personality and quirk. Pops of color are how I like to impart joy. There are so many really cool color combinations out there that you might not have considered before. You can pair bright with bright, bright with dark, bright with neutral to get that perfect blend of what’s you and whats you-but-elevated. Does that make sense?

When I’m designing interiors, one of the first things I ask a client is, “how do you feel about color?”, as this will inform every other decision in the space. The second question I ask is, “how do you use the space?” I try to dig deeper into my clients’ routines to see if there is anything unique about the way they live and the uses of their furniture pieces. I give the example that I need a giant coffee table because my coffee table is where I eat meals, relax, have snacks, paint my nails, light my incense, put on my skincare, etc. My coffee table needs to not just be a coffee table, so decorating it needs to 1. be functional and 2. spark joy (as Marie Kondo would say).

Adding color just sparks joy. For me, I feel like there are so many colors in nature, and by bringing them into your home and placing them in unsuspecting places, your soul is getting a little glimpse of the outdoors, even while stuck indoors. If you are color averse, that’s totally ok! But the fact remains that color sparks joy for most people. So, my best advice would be to get to know your routine and see if there is a small spot of joy you can add to your decor and your day. It could even be a simple as a brightly colored toothbrush; you know, just something that you would notice and appreciate.

Do you see how in many of these pairings, there is a vibrant color paired with a neutral earth tone? Take that as your guide! The color palette of nature will never lead you astray. If you wanted to start small, add a pairing of pottery and a print in one of the color schemes above. If you’re ready to take it to the next level, paint a powder room! I LOOOOVE a vibrant powder room. I’ve heard so many designers say that the powder room really is a representation of your personality. A guest will be in there for mere minutes, so bring them so much joy with some unexpected vibrance.

You already know which pairing I’m feeling…the first one with the Klein blue. I can’t help myself; I’m so predictable. How are you feeling about these home decor color schemes in 2020? Remember, you can always take the color combo and make them yours. Colors in different tones are still part of the same family; mint green is still in the same ballpark as seafoam green. You can shift the tone to make it work for you. I wrote about my favorite free tool for coming up with color palettes to get your creative wheels turning. Best of luck, you future color-lover, you!
