In my mind, we are so close to spring (even though I am writing this in mid February). The other day at Central Park I spotted the first daffodil buds that were 3 inches tall so we are getting there! The closer we inch towards spring, the more I can feel its arrival. I’m craving freshness, joy, and renewal in my home, and I figured you do too. So today I’m sharing my go to strategy for affordable spring decor.
As a creative, I need change in my space for a continuous source of inspiration and joy. Change in my space makes me feel alive. It helps me feel connected to my space, my work, and the season itself. My desire for change coincides with the changing of seasons because I am deeply rooted in my environment, both inside and outside.
BUT! I am also very budget conscious and do my best to leave a small footprint and make eco-friendly choices and not contribute much to the landfills. So, where does that leave us with decorating?
I developed this affordable spring decor strategy years ago, which focuses on small, easy to obtain items that won’t break the bank or require much storage space when you’re ready to change it up again.
These small but very mighty pieces will give a refreshing boost to your mental and physical space (because, yes, design can absolutely do both!).
My Strategy for AFFORDABLE Spring Decor (3 Simple Steps)

Step 1: Swap your pillow covers
Years ago, I became a pillow collector. I only buy pillow covers so that I can change them regularly. And 90% of of the pillow covers I buy are on sale or clearance.
Designer Guidance: buy pillow covers that bring you JOY. This is especially important for spring. Coming out of winter, your body, mind, and space get a nice reset. Buying whatever pillow covers bring you joy will give you a hit of dopamine (you know, the feel good hormone) when you see them.
Designer Recommendations: I choose size 18×18 and 20×20 for a sofa. These two sizes look great together.
Step 2: Swap your art prints
Myth: great art doesn’t come in prints. WRONG-O, FRIEND-O.
Many many amazing artists create prints as an additional income stream and to help put beautiful special pieces into the homes of those who don’t have the budget for originals. My entire home is filled with art prints I adore and I think I have curated a pretty amazing home gallery that is reflective of my personality (pats self on back).
Designer Recommendations: I love getting smaller pieces (8×10, 9×12) so I can create vertical groupings of 2 on the wall. It’s perfectly charming and draws you in–not to mention these sizes have the lowest price point!
Step 3: Swap your throws
I am *firmly* planted in team muslin/gauze and waffle weave blankets. They are airy, breezy, light, and comforting. There’s a reason they are often used as baby blankets!
Designer Guidance: if using for the sofa, get in throw size or even twin bed size! If you are tall like me, the latter will be best for your body’s length. If using for a bed accent and not a full bed covering, you don’t need to order your bed size! Measure the width of your bed and get the size that allows the blanket to drape a little over the edges (8-10″ on each side). Typically twin or full size is good enough!
Bonus points: thrift small decor
I am also a collector of small unique items. For this, I thrift! You can find decorative one of a kind pieces at thrift stores for a very small price–you can even take it one step further and update the thrifted items to make them even more special! This is how you get your home to look like you and not a department store. It’s the small pieces that amplify the big. It’s the small pieces that speak to the soul.
And there you have it, folks! Your easy peasy strategy for affordable spring decor and beyond! You can use this strategy for any seasonal decorating or if you just want a refresh because you had a tough week and need a pick me up. Follow these steps, friend. Your home will feel wonderful and your wallet won’t be much lighter, but your spirit will be:-)
