Happy BEDROOM January! So far we’ve talked about minimalist bed styling and modern neutral bedroom design styles. Today, we’re discussing bedroom color schemes and patterns that give some perk while retaining a calm feel.
There is no ‘one size fits all formula’ to bedrooms. I suggest you gather inspiration from many places and then try to replicate what you are drawn to, adding your own personal spin on it. We want our spaces to inspire and the only way they do that is if the speak to YOU!
Bedroom Color Schemes & Pattern Ideas
Generally speaking, bedrooms tend to do well with a softer feel. Which makes sense, because you do your hardcore relaxing and resetting in there! But not everyone wants a neutral bedroom. My ideal style is base neutrals with pops of color aka happiness. So for this post, I’m presenting various color schemes and pattern play that feels special but also not energetic.
1. Subtle Neutrals
The look: soft textured neutrals paired with traditional pattern
Why this works: Grasscloth is the single greatest wallpaper choice for those who want some dimension and texture on the walls but don’t want to commit to a pattern. Grasscloth and what looks like velvet curtains provide a comforting base perfect to befriend a traditional pattern on the upholstered bed.
2. Soft Pop
The look: base neutrals with a pop
Why this works: Notice the only bright colors in this space are the yellow and blue in the art. The rest are soft, subdued neutrals. The rosey pink hue is for the bedding is still bright and warm, but it is much softer and lends to being a very nice pairing with a boucle chair and ivory and taupe rug.
3. Neutral Mural with Pattern Play
The look: patterned neutrals grounded with dark woods and lightened by whimsical color and pattern
Why this works: The pricey parts of this space will lend themselves to endless iterations over time! A punchy neutral wall mural paired with walnut architectural furniture will be timeless while the bedding and accents can be updated as styles evolve. There is a grounding and masculine element that is made greater by the softness of pattern and color.
4. Primary Color Pop
The look: warm neutral base with pops of primary colors
Why this works: The warm neutrals of gray taupes soften the overall look and the pops of primary colors add a fun and youthful element. Color doesn’t overwhelm and this is still calming, but with a kick.
5. Micro Pattern Play
The look: Micro patterns paired with solid subdued colors
Why this works: The mix of tonal patterned drapes and a slim striped wallpaper help to create a layered base that’s not in your face. The art replicates the stripes of the wallpaper and warm velvet upholstery grounds the space and adds personality without adding drama.
6. Punch and Peace
The look: Punchy wallpaper with soft grounding neutrals
Why this works: The wallpaper creates a focal point and serves as art itself. A tonal rug softly supports the bed and allows for the wallpaper to be the top tier in terms of hierarchy. The darker wood grounds while the soft curved lighting fall into the background as supporting elements letting the other details shine.
7. Sweet and Simple
The look: soft architectural minimalism
Why this works: A peach painted wood headboard paired with a Parsons style nightstand add architecture but the soft tones don’t make it feel monolithic and heavy. The soft blue art can be found in the rug and the tonal palette has just 2 gray tone hues of peach and light blue.
8. Organic Minimalism
The look: sage toned organic minimalism
Why this works: A sage with a gray undertone in both bedding and wall color serve as our grounding base. These tones are accented by off whites in the rug and art and a warm toned wood paired with a minimal off centered pendant give a cool casual look of classic Japandi style.
9. Elevated Earth Tones
The look: taupes paired with textural neutrals and calming art
Why this works: A sage with a gray undertone in both bedding and wall color serve as our grounding base. These tones are accented by off whites in the rug and art and a warm toned wood paired with a minimal off centered pendant give a cool casual look of classic Japandi style.
10. Playful Tonal
The look: whimsical brush stroke wallpaper paired with heavily textured linens
Why this works: The wallpaper adds playfulness while still being neutral and not overpowering. The velvet headboard, fur pillow, and linen bedding with the visible wood grained nightstand keep this feeling adult.
11. Fantastical Florals
The look: whimsical large scale wall mural with formal supporting elements
Why this works: The wallpaper adds playfulness while being grounded by more “serious” furnishings you would find at an upscale hotel. Streamlined silhouettes and deep hues and a rich masculine feel are softened by smooth fabrics and an ethereal wall mural. Perfect balance (but like, not in an evil Thanos way, ya know?)
I hope you were inspired by these bedroom color schemes and pattern ideas! Take it lightly and give yourself freedom to play around and see what feels right for you. Your bedroom color schemes can change and grow with you, so don’t be afraid to lean into what you’re drawn to in the moment. That will inform how it will evolve and grow with you.
