Tom Yum Soup with Bone Broth

Tom Yum soup with bone broth
Sick of plain old chicken noodle? Amp up your sick day sustenance with my Tom Yum soup with bone broth.

Is someone in your home sick? If so, this soup is just the ticket. My Tom Yum soup with bone broth is super easy and comforting and a great meal for when you’re feeling under the weather. Time to spice up your sick day plans!

Think of Tom Yum soup as the Thai version of the classic chicken soup that you are used to. Except, Tom Yum soup is full of even more healing ingredients including homemade bone broth, ginger, turmeric, veggies, and fresh herbs. With this soup, you’ll be feeling better in no time.

This recipe requires very minimal effort–seriously. Cooking is the last thing you want to do when you’re sick. You can make a pot of this and eat from it for a few days. It’s perfect. It’s also a nice treat for when you are sick of the usual soup options. Soup is so healing for you and you should try to avoid the canned versions as much as you can.

Bone Broth Benefits

There are so many benefits of bone broth, turmeric, garlic, and ginger, so this soup is incredibly healing and so good for your system. I like to make soup with bone broth after I’ve completed a round of antibiotics or if I’ve been taking Ibuprofen for a few days. It’s really effective in resetting and healing your gut.

Did you know that some of your immune system and nervous system is located in your gut? True story! So if you are getting sick or notice some anxiety, take a look at what you’re feeding your gut and then feed it something healing. Cognitune created this great infographic showing you just how powerful bone broth is.

Tom Yum Soup with Bone Broth Recipe

Tom Yum soup with bone broth

This recipe was adapted from The Spruce Eats

Ingredients

-2T coconut oil

-1.5-2lbs free range chicken drumsticks (bone in, skin on)

-6c water, divided

-2 bay leaves (or keffir lime leaves if you have access)

-1T turmeric

-1t red pepper flakes

-1 2-inch knob ginger, unpeeled (or galangal if you have access)

-3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

-2c baby carrots, roughly chopped

-1t organic chicken base (I use Better Than Bouillon)*

-1 zucchini, roughly chopped

-1c coconut milk

-juice of 1/2 lime (lemon can be a substitute)

-1T fish sauce

-1t salt

*because we aren’t taking 8 hours to make our bone broth, I like to add a little bit of chicken base to give even more flavor

Directions

-in Dutch oven, warm coconut oil on high heat

-add chicken drumsticks, garlic, ginger, and brown chicken for 10 minutes, turning occasionally so each side has even browning

-add 4c water, bay leaves, turmeric, red pepper flakes, carrots, chicken base, and bring to boil

-simmer (partially covered) on low heat for 2 hours, checking water levels occasionally

-remove drumsticks from pot and shred chicken (it will be falling off the bone)

-return meat to pot, add zucchini, coconut milk, 2c water, lime juice, fish sauce

-simmer another 10 minutes

-make final seasoning adjustments, adding more salt and fish sauce if desired

-remove bay leaves, knob of ginger, smashed garlic cloves

-serve with lime wedges, Sriracha, and fresh herbs like cilantro and mint

Tom Yum soup with bone broth

If you aren’t fussy about being too much of a traditionalist and want a heftier meal, you can serve this over cooked rice, noodles, or alongside some naan. When you’re sick, I say go for the carbs, darlin’. You can add some heat with Sriracha or chili oil to clear those sinuses. When you use spicy food to clear sinuses, make sure you also hydrate well! Godspeed, sick friend.

Tom Yum soup with bone broth

For a vegetarian or vegan option of my Tom Yum soup with bone broth, I will use Bon Appetit’s garlic broth  as a substitute for the bone broth. I love using this when I want something healing without the meat. It’s also a great base for any soup if you want that healing, girl! You can even use it as a base for regular chicken noodle. Enjoy!
