Traditional Bedroom with PLAID

Hey there! As I’m getting older (I just turned 32!), I find myself having more traditional leanings. OH GOOD GOD. Granted, now my version of traditional is different than most, but still, times they are a changin’.

Maybe it’s my obsession with master designer, Brian Patrick Flynn, who designs all the HGTV dream homes, but I have recent leanings towards plaid everything. If you’re not following Brian on Instagram, you should. He lives in the mountains in Georgia with a cute dog and he makes frequent trips to Iceland, bringing you along. He also loves plaid. And now so do I. Here’s another view of the design that’s less rendered so you can picture it in your own home (I always find less rendered images help with the imagination!).

This bedroom is an updated take on a traditional aesthetic. Now, beige gets a bad reputation. Beige accents can be incredibly soothing and make your bedroom a place of serenity. While the Scandinavian vibe is very on trend, there is something about warm neutrals. Unlike Scandinavian styles, traditional styles are very warm and cozy. There is something to be said about a style that is ubiquitous year after year; it just works for literally everyone. We all just want a nice sanctuary to come home to at the end of a long day. This palette will never go out of style for that reason. Everyone wants to feel the same thing in their space, so find the emotion of each room and build around that. Forget about labels like “traditional”, “bad beige”, etc, and just use the palette to inspire you, while also adding modern updates and mixing different styles to make it yours. Badabing badaboom.

That’s the beauty of design: it doesn’t have to all be the same style. You have freedom.

For this design, I used a lot of neutral tones, hunter greens, plaid, vintage items, and plenty of layers. I added a shiplap ceiling to provide more texture and coziness without weighing down the room. A tufted bed is traditional but is also a modern choice. It lends itself to be the focal point of the room with the tufting and adds a greater sense of cozy. The green dresser, chair, and pillows are vintage. I love adding vintage items to spaces because they give a more lived in and timeless feel…because they actually are lived in and timeless!

Seamlessly combining vintage, traditional, and modern can be tricky. But remember, it will go much easier for you if you work from your color palette. It is easy to give different items a common ground if they are similar in some way. Here, I was able to combine a traditional style with the plaid, bed, and artwork, add vintage items, modern pieces such as the bedside tables, green malachite table, layered rugs, benches at the foot of the bed, and table lamps, and then even incorporate the farmhouse style with the shiplap ceiling, rustic wood flooring, and industrial sconces. The chandelier is one of my favorites. It’s style is traditional, with the spun glass and brass, but it is updated and modernized with it’s shape. See, easy peasy!
