Modern Blue Rustic Kitchen

Hey, girl, hey!

I love this modern blue rustic kitchen so, so, so much. It’s a cool girl kitchen, FOR SURE. It really makes me wish I was a person who owned instead of rented so that I, too, could be a cool girl with a cool kitchen. Alas, I have to live vicariously through others, and that’s cool too. (Except for it’s not.)

When I think of a cool girl, I think of someone who doesn’t sweat the small stuff, who is effortlessly fashionable all the time, and who just knows how to casually be SO COOL. This is her story, I mean kitchen.

What I wanted to do with this modern blue rustic kitchen was make it impactful but minimal. Cool girls don’t have clutter. I feel like my mom might have said that to me as a teenager (or college kid) in an effort to get me to clean my room. Joke’s on her because I definitely didn’t muahaha. Anyways, cool girls know how to achieve the perfect balance of color and neutrals, pattern and textures, vintage and new, all while looking like it took zero effort to look all put together and perfect. As for me, I just noticed I have a clump of coconut oil in my hair. So, that’s where I’m currently at.

To all my cool girls, you’ll probably be like, “that’s my kitchen!” and to those aspiring cool girls with coconut oil in their hair and clutter in their head, this will give you a jumping off point.

For this modern blue rustic kitchen, I wanted to achieve a light and airy look, while having visual stimuli and being bold at the same time. Do you know what cool things you can add to your kitchen? First, my favorite thing is this white faucet. It’s not clunky, it’s minimal and so so chic and modern. The key to a good design is taking things that have to be present in every kitchen, ie: a faucet, and searching for a different take on that item. This white beauty fits the bill perfectly.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel just to have a successful design, you just have to buy a wheel in a different style.

I went with a deep brilliant blue cabinet that has a minimal design, a concrete countertop and sink combo, a cool patterned tile floor, and an updated subway tile backsplash. When I say updated subway tile I mean that I went with a beveled edge which just makes it look more modern and thoughtful and I also went with black grout.

When it comes to lighting, your first priority should be to preserve as much natural lighting as possible, especially in the kitchen. I always like to do some pendants over the island, and then some other lighting near the sink but leave the windows bare. If your next door neighbor has a front row seat of your kitchen, you can do a sheer curtain or a roman shade so that you can still have full natural light but some privacy from peepers.

I believe a kitchen island should be treated like a custom piece of furniture.

Its materials should be selected in a way that will go with the rest of the kitchen, but also stand on its own. It’s a giant thing in the middle of the room, so you should probably make it something cool to look at. In the case of this kitchen, I used shiplap for the sides of the island because something white and linear will give a nod to the white linear subway tile, while the awesome recycled glass counter will compliment the blue cabinetry. It’s a large island, so giving it texture as opposed to a ton of color will work in this space since the cabinetry is already a color. Balance, friends.

As for furniture and finishes for our modern blue rustic kitchen, I chose vintage bar stools and vintage red pendants, and neutral pendants over the sink. These neutral fixtures will go well on the wall with the windows because: nature, and will pick up on the warm wood of the floors.

I am OBSESSED with Cle Tile. They can do no wrong. These brilliant cement encaustic tiles are absolutely stunning and great quality. They add a modern design element but the colorway is more of a muted hue so it doesn’t make you dizzy. Love, love, love.
