Orange and Navy Blue Boy’s Bedroom

This room design was inspired by this awesome faux wood wallpaper from Blik. Blik is one of my favorite sources for wall murals and wall coverings when you need something fun and unexpected, even artsy (their Keith Haring wallcoverings are THE BEST). So this worked out great. The faux wood wall tile makes me feel like I am in a tree house. It's magical.

Howdy! I want to start off with a disclaimer: this is a room for ANY gender. I just labeled it as a “boy’s” bedroom in this post because of Google rankings and boring SEO (search engine optimization) stuff. I’m all about anyone having any color. My favorites of the internet are Studio DIY and Jeff Mindell. They have a darling baby, Arlo, and dress him up in every color of the rainbow. They are the coolest family.

This orange and navy blue boy’s bedroom design was inspired by this awesome faux wood wallpaper from Blik. Blik is one of my favorite sources for wall murals and wall coverings when you need something fun and unexpected, even artsy (their Keith Haring wallcoverings are THE BEST). So this worked out great. The faux wood wall tile makes me feel like I am in a tree house. It’s magical. I would also use this in a bathroom. I think that would be super fun and it comes in lots of crazy colors. Anyways, once you find the perfect thing, you scream “YES!!!!” at your laptop, then you design around that and everything keeps getting more and more perfect. I love it when that happens. It’s design serendipity.

Now, mixing patterns can be scary. Momma Kristen knows, child. BUT! It is so worth it, if it is done properly. Notice in this orange and navy blue boy’s bedroom, I have chosen a design featuring a ton of pattern and texture…definitely not super neutral. However, the colors are congruous and the scale of the patterns are complimentary. So, folks, we have ourselves a winner! Side note, can I call myself ‘Momma Kristen’ if I am just a mom to plants…half of which have died? Let’s revisit that later.

Once I found this navy wallpaper, I wanted to do a bright complementary color. Orange! I lessened the intensity of these two colors, though. For this orange and navy blue boy’s bedroom, instead of going with a pure blue and orange, I shifted my sights and went with a darker blue (navy) and a lighter more earthy orange similar to a terracotta. Because if we have an adventurous room, you know your child is playing outdoors. I smoothed the design out with neutral colors so as not to scare you off. And look! You’re still here! It worked!

The art is my favorite part, next to the awesome wallpaper. One of my favorite artists currently is Matthew Korbel-Bowers. Check him out. He has so many awesome modern prints but just as many could be suitable for a child’s room. I used two of his prints: one, a bright orange entitled ‘Boulder’ (how fitting), and the second resembles either legos or tetris. Both are great for a kid. They are just super colorful and FUN. I also love Roy Lichtenstein. This pop art print of a sunset is perfect in both color and design concept of being an adventurer`

This design is just super fun. It is adventurous and exciting, perfectly complimenting the energy and imagination of your little guy. I’ll say it again: designing kid rooms is the best. I am thrilled with the results of this orange and navy blue boy’s room and kind of wish it was mine. Is that weird?
